Artist Statement
I like to think of matters as a process. Life is a process, art is a process, photography is a process. Although the process takes in photography is much more instantaneous now than when it was when I started photography in 1977.
Twelve years ago, on March 1, 2005, I did my first solo art exhibition ever at Andante in Central, Hong Kong. When Tony asked me to stage another exhibition 12 years later, I was thrilled.
I went back to look at over 50,000 images I have taken since 2005, they start to reflect a gradual shift with myself, my esthetics and the world over time.
In spite many of these photos are no longer meaningful to me, I manage to sort out some recurrent images and theme that are important. I also managed to find photographs I took in around 1977 while I was a student studying photography at Cornell University. Together this exhibition defines different stages of my development. Seems like every motion has a before, during and after. They represent different stages of transformation, and somehow time, people and space is the framework in which this transformation takes place. I came up with the name “Before / During / After” for this exhibition. I translated it into Chinese 「之前 / 之中 / 之後」. The Chinese name has a very interesting double meaning. Other than the literal translation from the English title, it also means “in front, middle, behind” or “fore-ground, middle ground, back ground”, terms we frequently apply to three dimensional space, as well as art and photography in the concept of depth.
To stage this exhibition at Andante instead of in a white cube space brings in the aspect of place. As an architect and an interior designer, this is always important to me. The works are placed in response to the sequence of space and the furniture is staged around the works.
